Below is a quote from a speech delivered by Steve Jobs, one of the creators/artists of MACINTOSH, to the graduating class of Stanford University. In it is a quote that to me is beyond profound. I want to share it with you all in hopes that you read it and keep it with you forever. Print it out. Put it on your bathroom mirror, in your purse, your journal, on the visor of your car. Put it where ever you want, but really read it and think it through.
"You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.
Often times as an artist I feel like I’m being creatively squashed by the business aspect of what I do. Then I start to think about retiring, AGAIN. Do you even know how many times I have retired(or at least said I was going to)? I am only 34. Come on! So then I think about what I would want to do in my "PERFECT LIFE"…"MY DREAM WORLD"… After I think long and hard about it, I realize I would be a PHOTOGRAPHER. It is in my blood and who I am. I am an artist who LOVES to create with my camera. I see things others don’t and I love it.
The business aspect of photography often becomes very difficult when you are an artist so it is important to keep things in perspective. Once you start to have overhead in the profession you choose, your work can end up being motivated by other things therefore stomping on your creativity.
I find that it is important to take a moment to reflect and refocus from time to time and see what you can do to get back on track. If you are doing what you love, the rest will fall in to place.
I have a very close friend who is a doctor and who, in addition to being a healer, is also clearly an artist and writer. We often times brainstorm to one another about what we could be doing differently to feed our creative spirit…our SOUL. Is it where we live that is the problem? Are there things we can do that can still feed our creative spirit while we continue to run thriving businesses? The answer is YES. It is up you to feed your SOUL whether that is on a spiritual level or an artistic one. If where you live is a factor, then make it a priority to travel more or move. If the people you are around are squashing your spirit, then find others to surround yourself with. Find people who inspire you and people who are driven. It will only push you to become better and better. You will then be able to give back even more of yourself to others.
What is the ultimate creative block for someone? The answer, in my opinion, is money. That is it! How do we eliminate that from the equation? Well, when we have a business and overhead we cannot really eliminate it but if we are doing what we truly love, the rest will fall in to place, including the money. Maybe you work less for money and work more on personal projects. Maybe you do more travel work, which for me I think is going to be a big part of my answer. Who knows? The possibilities are endless but the end goal for me as an artist is to feed my soul constantly and continue to surround myself with others who are driven, ambitious, passionate and giving of their time and talents.
What is your passion? What are you ambitious about? Who do you look up to? What are your gifts? What are your goals? What do you want to contribute to this life? How can you do that effectively? In the words of Steve Jobs, "How can you put a DING in the universe?"
Good luck figuring all of that out. If you stay true to your spirit the answers to those questions will come. I have asked these same questions of myself over the past month or so and boy are the answers right there in front of me. Now, I just have to make them all a reality and put them into effect.
I will finish with yet another quote from Steve Jobs…
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
I would love to hear feedback from any of you who are reading my blog from time to time. I am sure you can contribute to the conversation with your own thoughts.
Thanks!
